A named storm deductible is a separate deductible for wind and hail damage during a named storm. It is typically a percentage of your home's value, not a flat dollar amount. To find what you would pay first, multiply that percentage by the dwelling coverage on your policy.
Hurricane season opens June 1, so now is the time to look. Scott Insurance Services is an independent agency in Flowood, Mississippi, here since 1954. We write homeowners insurance across the state.
When does the named storm deductible apply?
Mississippi has a rule for homeowners policies from licensed, or admitted, insurers. The named storm deductible starts when the first named storm watch or warning is issued for any part of the state. It ends 24 hours after the last watch or warning ends.

During that window it applies to wind, wind gusts, hail, rain, tornado or cyclone damage.
Windpool and surplus lines policies are not covered by that rule, so read your own policy.
A 2025 bill to revise the hurricane deductible, House Bill 1479, died in committee. The rule above still stands. These figures were checked in October 2026.
Does homeowners insurance cover hurricane damage?
There is no separate hurricane policy. The Mississippi Insurance Department says a standard homeowners policy covers wind and hail, but not flood.
Read your policy for a windstorm exclusion. The department's hurricane checklist tells homeowners to make sure their policy does not include one. Flood needs its own policy, and a new flood policy usually waits 30 days to start.
What if no insurer will write wind on my coastal home?
It is for property the private market declines. A licensed Mississippi resident agent applies for you, with documented declinations from licensed insurers. The windpool covers wind and hail only, not flood. It also will not bind new or increased coverage while a named storm is in the Gulf. These figures were checked in October 2026.
Can a FORTIFIED roof lower my premium?
It can. Mississippi law requires insurers to give discounts for homes built or upgraded to IBHS standards. Insurers have filed discounts of 15 to 30 percent with the state. Ask your agent what your insurer gives. These figures were checked in October 2026.
